Drum connexions feature article 2006 (www.drumconnexions.co.nz)
"Energy drums. Paul has a unique jagged-edge pocket, nearest thing I've found to Copeland. Many of the ideas we captured I was unable to make a reality with any other drummer."
Daniel Bedingfield (www.danielbedingfield.com)
"Paul Russell is the most versatile and experienced drummer in New Zealand. He can very quickly realise drum arrangements and feels for any style of song. I have enjoyed working with Paul, all of our sessions have been very relaxed and productive. To put it simply, he is a real pleasure to record."
Andre Upston ('Aerial') (Recording Engineer,Radio New Zealand)
"Paul Russell is definately my first choice of drummers - not only is he extremely talented - his professionalism, faultless timing. intuitive feel and great sense of humour make him a pleasure to work with."
Miriam Clancy (Singer/Songwriter) www.miriamclancy.com
"Paul Russell is undoubtabley the best drummer I have ever had the privilege to work with. Not only is he musically intelligent but extremely professional and very easy to work with. He gives everything to every song."
Bruce Conlon (Solo Artist) www.bruceconlon.com
Despite
having so many talented drummers, there are a select few that have that X factor,
and I sincerely believe that Paul Russell is one of those people. He is one
of those pocket players that is so far in the groove that you need a needle
to scrape him out.
Feature Article - Drum Connexions Magazine (www.drumconnexions.co.nz)
In a studio environment when looking for a session drummer, there are
a number of key attributes required. They need to be punctual, professional,
creative, easy to work with, have impeccable timing, and above all else, know
how to make a song groove. Paul is now always my first choice for session work
because he excels in all these areas, making my job easy and keeping everyone
(especially the clients) happy . . . . Paul is one of the hardest working and
naturally gifted musicians I know. His commitment to the craft of drumming and
his professional approach has in my opnion, put him at the top of his game and
second to none here in New Zealand.
Head Engineer York St Studios (www.yorkstreet.co.nz)
Paul is
a skilled and experienced drummer who has developed an outstanding reputation
in the New Zealand music scene, performing with many top artists, both live
and in the studio. This level of participation in the industry meant that Pauls
students were receiving tuition from one of New Zealands best drummers,
and one who could speak from fresh and incredibly solid experience.
Course Director - Excel School of Performing Arts (www.excel.ac.nz)
Initially impressed with Pauls well documented and vast musical
talent, years in the music business have shown me it takes more than talent
to propel an individuals career and create demand for ones services.
Business skills such as marketing and publicity, derived from Pauls experience
in running bands have become essential to a musicians success . . . .
Pauls attitude, enthusiasm, and dedication have earned him my respect,
and the respect of the New Zealand Musicians and music community.
Manager York St Recording Studios (www.yorkstreet.co.nz)
Over the course of Eights album release and subsequent promotion
Paul single-handedly booked and promoted a successful national tour, initiated
advertising campaigns, competently liased with media and retail, pursued music
licensing opportunities, and generally went above and beyond what was required
at any given time. In continuing to deal with Paul on a daily basis he never
failed to impress. He was always personable, organised, and highly enjoyable
to work with. The communication flow that we maintained was the best I have
ever experienced in dealing with local artists . . . I cannot recommend Paul
enough - as a skilled musician, an excellent tour and band manager, superb oprganiser
and communicator, and all round nice guy. While I wish him all the very best
for his future, I cant help thinking that the New Zealand music industry
has lost a valuable player in every respect.
